What could be more insane than ignoring all which is eternal, true, joyful,

loving and divine to chase the shallow, ephemeral objects

of our desires, mere mirages of our ego?

Rumi introduces the issue by pointing out that

A lunatic’s sphere this world is and we shouldn’t

always agree it’s real.

Do you still agree it’s real?

Are you SURE?

Well, it is and it isn’t.

It all depends on how one looks at it.

But if you think it is entirely real immediately

becomes a deadly TRAP.

William Golding adds that:

We’re all mad, the whole damned race. We’re wrapped in illusions, delusions, confusions about the penetrability of partitions, we’re all mad

and in solitary confinement.

1) Consider this:

When a man reaches the age of reason he should become aware

that he ignores why he is born, who he is and what

he is supposed to do here on Earth.

So what does he do?

Of course, strives to find out who he really is, his true destiny and the ultimate meaning of his life?

No, the vast majority is merely interested in earning a good living,

enjoying pleasures and comforts –

while waiting to die.

It makes no sense, no sense at all.

The problem is that our whole culture, with its conflicting customs, philosophies, ideologies, politics and even its religions as they are mostly practiced

is deeply schizophrenic and tends to make so everyone

who identifies himself with it.

If you are seeking the Divine or even just the meaning of your life, unless you live amongst very spiritual people many will doubt you mental sanity, but they are insane, not you.

2) As the Fathers used to say,

All the foundations of the world

are upside down.

In our culture the essential is mostly ignored and the superficial almost worshipped and our system of education brings about a deep ignorance of the values of life:

– Governments speak of peace and make war.

– Our legal system protects only the rich

who can afford the best lawyers and sends to jail almost only the poor.

– Our system of education reinforces materialism, selfishness,

conformism and alienation.

– Religions mostly bogs their believers down into quagmires of dogmas

and obsolete rituals instead of bringing them to the Divine,

– The mass media consists mostly of misinformation and brainwashing to keep the masses in ignorance and a deep slumber.

As Rsiffiaoi noted,

We live in a culture where people are more offended by “swear” words

and middle fingers than by famine, warfare and the destruction

of our environment.

John Lennon agrees:

We live in a world where we have to hide to make love,

while violence is practiced in broad daylight.

3) Ask yourself then

Which world is this in which we make amazing discoveries in all scientific fields all the time

but have not yet even begun to stop wars,

oppression and hunger?

A world where

the Nobel prize for Peace is given to Obama,

who bombed as many as seven countries.

Consider Osho’s question: “Why are these Adolf Hitlers, Joseph Stalins and Mao Zedongs

born again and again? From where do they come?”

His answer is that:

They represent you, represent the essential

madness of humanity.

How so?

David Icke explains it:

The human race has developed a form of collective schizophrenia in which

we are not only the slaves to this imposed thought behavior

but we are also the police force of it.

If our world wasn’t insane, J. M. de Maistre could not possibly have got published and agreed upon by many his disgusting praise of war:

“War is thus divine in itself, since it is a law of the world. War is divine through its consequences of a supernatural nature which are as much general as particular. War is divine in the mysterious glory that surrounds it and in the no less inexplicable attraction that draws us to it. War is divine by the manner in which it breaks out.”

Is this not one of the worst monstrosities you ever read?

4) Religion:

The Christ’s message is one of love and compassion

for everyone and forgiveness to all.

Notwithstanding this most “Christians” still believe that if they make a “sin” and fail to confess it and get it absolved by a priest then God, who is infinite Love and compassion, will

forever and ever and even without any end!

How can God possibly be so much worse than even the most vicious gangster or Nazi, who torture their victims only for a few days before killing them, not for all eternity?

The fact that millions of people still believe that God would torture them

in an eternal Hell, forever and ever, clearly means that

their mind is basically INSANE.

If something so obviously ABSURD is believed, ask yourself now:

which other insanities do we believe as well?

Have you ever re-examined all the beliefs in your mind?

Hinduism reached the utmost height of spiritual vision,

and yet many of its traditional practitioners still support

the oppressive caste system

5) The Economy:

About 1300 billionaires have hoarded 94% of the world’s money

and left all the rest of us, seven billion people,

the remaining 6%.

It has been calculated that to provide everyone on earth with all basic needs,

sufficient food, shelter and education, would cost so many billions of dollars a year,

but about such an amount is globally been spent

and weapons of war.

It makes no sense, no sense at all.

To make just one example, in the year 2012 because of the economic crisis the Italian government reduced many essential social services for the poor, pensions, free health care, etc, causing extreme hardships for millions of people and the death of many through lack of inadequate health services, plus many suicides caused by their desperation

and yet at the same time spent BILLIONS

to purchase bomber planes.

6) Education

Our schools teach our children all sorts of things but not

how to have a happy and harmonious life,

let alone how to discover who they really are, how to solve their human conflicts and problems, how to become free of their fears and suffering,

and nothing about real Love.

This is like giving them stones

when they need bread

Such “education has produced a vast number of people who knows so many things of which almost none help them to live, or even prevent them from having a fulfilling life, who suffer all sorts of physical, emotional and mental problems

and become like strangers to themselves.

7) Principles and Values:

The qualities that most pay lip service to, like love, honesty, generosity,

kindness, generosity, etc are associated with naivety

and a lack of common sense.

while those that we theoretically disapprove of, or pretend to, like greedy acquisitiveness “Looking after Number One”, self-interest and a barely disguised avidity, even meanness and ruthlessness

are associated with being rich, successful,

powerful, influential, etc

8) Entertainment:

Video stores sell countless films full of insane violence, of people killing,

torturing each other, horror films and porn,

plus so many stupid, “amusing” films and comedies celebrating the inane superficiality of most human lives,

but very few uplifting films with a positive message.

What does this tell you about our “civilization”?

9) Advertisements

There is little which makes people even dumber than they already are

than watching advertisements on the TV,

and yet so many do, and even buy the advertised products, without considering that the enormous amount of money that companies spend on ads also on signboards, magazines, etc

is a substantial part of their price, therefore

one cannot get a fair value for them.

Of course what one should do is, instead of watching the ads, is to examine the rapport quality/price of those products, and consumer protection organizations are there to help for that.

10) Alimentation

The Divine made wonderful sweet fruits and nuts for us but most prefer

sweets and drinks made with all sorts or noxious,

harmful chemical and artificial coloring.

It has been definitely proved by several independent scientific researchers that eating meat, the corpse of animals, brings about many diseases, and so do all processed aliments with artificial coloring and flavoring; plus vegetables grown with very harmful pesticides and chemical fertilizers,

yet they consist of almost all which is sold

in our supermarkets.

11) Ignoring Road Maps:

Even apart from the words of spiritual Teachers, which most never bother to read,

we have been given a very good map to see the road of our life and its pitfalls,

Astrology, which when done by a sincere and competent astrologer

is a very precious tool, but most think it a superstition.

We have also other valid tools like the Tarot and the I-Ching, which can be like an alarm system to warn us of possible dangers and signposts indicating precious opportunities, but they also are ignored by most.

Ask yourself WHY.

12) Language and Semantics:

Consider the word “dear”: it means at the same time something which is important to us and we care about, and at the same time something very expensive, thereof setting in our subconscious the association that all which is dear to us must have a high price, and therefore

such things as love, joy, vision which cannot be bought

with money are less important!

Consider the word “immaterial”: used to disparage anything useless of irrelevant – it kind of implies that anything which is not “material” – like Love, Ecstasy, Vision is not real or useless.

13) Doctors and Medicines:

The Divine made the medical plant cannabis, a relaxing painkiller with many therapeutic properties,

but governments outlawed it and made legal alcohol and extremely harmful

psycho-pharmacs like Valium, Prozac, etc.

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, the third leading cause of death in USA after heart attack and cancer

is medical treatment.

14) Consider this report from the Wikipedia:

Richard Wisemen of the University of Hertfordshire made an experiment called the Laughlab where many people presented the jokes they liked most and then voted for the one they thought the best.

This is the winning joke, based on a 1951 show by Spike Milligan:

“Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn’t seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy has a phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps:

“My friend is dead! What can I do?”

The operator says

“Calm down. I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.”

There is a silence and then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says

“OK, now what?”

Now, in this joke someone gets killed because of a stupid misunderstanding, that’s all there is to it,

and the majority thought it the greatest joke of all!

15) Our civilization as a whole is insane:

As Henry Miller pointed out:

Civilization is drugs, alcohol, engines of war, prostitution, machines

and machine slaves, low wages, bad food, bad taste, prisons,

reformatories, lunatic asylums, divorce, perversion,

brutal sports, suicides, infanticide,

cinema, quackery, demagogy, strikes, lockouts, revolutions, putsches, colonization, electric chairs, guillotines, sabotage, floods, famine, disease, gangsters, money barons, horse racing, fashion shows, poodle dogs, chow dogs, Siamese cats, condoms, peccaries, syphilis, gonorrhea, insanity, neuroses, etc., etc.

Yes, of course civilization has also positive aspects like many kinds of art, social sciences, spiritual Teachers, healers, etc,

but that is not enough to make it sane – it makes

Consider how:

through our science we know a lot about HOW things work, but very little

about using them in the right way.

Nietzsche adds that:

Madness is something rare in individuals, but in groups,

parties, peoples, ages it is the rule.

Living it:

From Vijay’ old journals, 1963 – Teheran.

Yesterday just outside the mosque of the main bazaar I saw a mob of Shias and one of Sunnis slaughtering each other with all sorts of weapons, mostly cudgels and daggers but also a few firearms.

Both were passionately shouting “Allah Akbar!” God is Great, both so SURE that they had the right version of the Prophet’s teaching and the others were heretics to be killed. It was quite surreal.

Of course I already knew that most people are fundamentally insane, even raving mad, totally bonkers, but if I had needed a confirmation of it this would have been more than enough!

On top of it, their religion is Islam, and the meaning of Islam is PEACE!

Ha ha ha ha!

Question/ko’han 1 to 5:

To which extent can you see that the world is insane?

That’s all?

How do you deal with it?

How does it make you feel, besides the obvious?

What could be done to heal its insanity?

Question/ko’han 6 and 7:

Henry Miller pointed out that:

There is no salvation in becoming adapted

to a world which is crazy.

To which extent have you become adapted to such a world?

What will you do about it?

Vivekananda has the right attitude and the last word:

This world is a huge lunatic asylum where all men are mad, some after money,

some after women, some after name or fame, and a few after God.

I prefer to be mad after God.

What about you?

1) This passage of Stanislav Grof:

Unimaginable sums of money have been wasted in the insanity of the arms race

and the use of a minuscule fraction of the existing arsenal

of atomic weapons could destroy all life on earth.

Many millions of people have been killed in the two world wars and in countless other violent confrontations occurring for ideological, racial, religious, or economic reasons; hundreds of thousands were bestially tortured by the secret police of various totalitarian systems.

Insatiable greed is driving people to hectic pursuit of profit and acquisition of personal property beyond any reasonable limits. This strategy resulted in a situation where, beside the specter of a nuclear war,

humanity is threatened by several less spectacular, but insidious

and more predictable doomsday scenarios.

Among these are industrial pollution of soil, water, and air; the threat of nuclear waste and accidents; destruction of the ozone layer; the greenhouse effect… and the dangers of toxic additives in our food and drinks.

To this we can add a number of developments that are of less apocalyptic nature, but equally disturbing, such as species extinction proceeding at an astronomical rate, homelessness and starvation of a significant percentage of the world’s population, deterioration of family and crisis of parenthood,

disappearance of spiritual values, absence of hope and positive

perspective, loss of meaningful connection with nature,

and general alienation.

As a result of all the above factors, humanity now lives in chronic anguish on

the verge of a nuclear and ecological catastrophe while in possession

of fabulous technology approaching the world of science fiction.

2) These verses of Wu Hsin:

Man is the one who is insane:

His solution to his need of security is to

lock himself away in a prison.

What could be more secure

than a prison?

He passes his time in a solitary cell called “me”

believing that he is now safe and that

no other can harm him,

he has exchanged freedom

for security.

What is outside

the walls of the prison is the unknown,

possibly not secure, not safe,

at times hostile and

not at all predictable.

Yet what sane man would choose

prison over freedom?

Man is the one who is insane:

he trades the experience of life,

here and now,

for time and attention spent

regretting he past,

wishing for a better past and

hoping for a brighter future,

for a future that will right

what is now deemed not right.

The fragrance of the apple blossom,

the laughter of a child,

the blueness of the sky,

all sacrificed on the altar of

mental preoccupations.

What a waste!

Indeed this world is mostly insane,

but don’t let it discourage you:

the meaning of His Cosmic Plan

revealed will be before the end.
