A GUESTHOUSE OUR BEING HUMAN IS – RUMI
A guesthouse our being human is, with each morning
a new encounter: a delight, a depression
or bad mood, an ephemeral awareness
your unexpected visitors may be;
warmly welcome them all!
Even if a mob of sorrows are they
roughly sweeping your house out,
still hospitably treat each guest:
they may be clearing you out
for some higher joy.
Any dark thought, shame or bad will,
meet them at the door
and with a warm laughter invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes,
for each was sent to you
as a messenger from the beyond;
And although so deeply asleep we appear
an inner wakefulness is there
directing the dream.
What Rumi meant is that:
in any “terrible” or apparently “hopeless” situation we can always
reach into our depths’ vast potentials:
instead of concentrating on your difficulty open yourself as much
as possible, offer it to the Divine, and then
let His Grace do its work, that’s all.
An Australian aboriginal saying agrees:
We are all “Visitors” of this Time and this Place.
All that we are doing is to pass through them.
Our task here is to observe, learn, grow and LOVE.
Afterwards we will return home.
