THE DROP OF WATER AND THE SEA – RUMI

THE DROP OF WATER AND THE SEA – RUMI

Verses from various poems:

The soul of the universe is a pure and clear ocean.

Forms and shapes are the foam on that sea.

Plunge into this pure, clean ocean.

Don’t just play with the waves.

The foams on the sea’s surface never sand still.

Waves constantly move them about.

When they dry up,

they’re no longer even part of the sea.

The eye that sees the sea is different

than an eye that sees the bubbles.
Try to look with an eye that sees the sea,

not the bubbles.

Day and night, bubbles are made up of sea,

and it is the sea that activates them.

But it is amazing that you see the bubbles,

and not the sea.

Listen, O drop, give yourself up without regret,
and in exchange gain the Ocean
.

Listen, O drop, bestow upon yourself this honor,
and in the arms of the Sea be secure.

Who indeed should be so fortunate?

An ocean wooing a drop!

In God’s name, in God’s name, sell and buy at once!

Give a drop, and take this Sea full of pearls!

The wave said to the sea,
Could I be like you?

The sea replied,

It’s easy: just settle down.

Don’t wait any longer…
Dive in the ocean,

Leave and let the sea be you!

The eye that sees the sea is different

than an eye that sees the bubbles.
Try to look with an eye that sees the sea,

not the bubbles.

Day and night, bubbles are made up of sea,

and it is the sea that activates them.

But it is amazing that you see the bubbles,

not the sea.
